Device will allow test driving multifocal intraocular lens implants
Scientists at the Spanish Research Council have created a lightweight binocular visual simulator known as the SimVis that allows cataract patients to get a realistic idea of what their vision will be like after receiving a multifocal lens.
Cataract surgery involves replacing the lens of the eye once it has lost its transparency with an artificial intraocular lens, and there are many different synthetic lens types available. Choosing the right lens implant depends upon each patient's preferences.
The SimVis will allow patients to experiment with vision, which will help to lessen uncertainty and give patients better expectations of the outcome. The simulator can be controlled wirelessly via a mobile app or a tablet. Not only does this allow for controlling the device's lenses but also monitors the functional tests conducted on the patient.
