Most people are well aware of the numerous benefits that exercise has on physical and mental well-being but new research suggests that exercise is beneficial in maintaining ocular health as well. Exercise was found to slow or prevent macular degeneration or vision loss from glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine recently published their findings which demonstrated that exercise lowered the harmful overgrowth of blood vessels in the eyes of lab mice by as much as 45 percent.

Lab testing involved comparing mice that voluntarily exercised to mice that did not and researchers found that exercise reduced blood vessel overgrowth by 45 percent. A follow-up test confirmed these findings by showing a reduction of 32 percent.
