Protein Imbalance May Be Responsible for Cataracts

Researchers at the Technical University of Munich recently discovered that the composition of the protein solution within the eye's lens was a significant factor in the development of cataracts.

The cells within the lens of the eye are made up of a protein solution that is very concentrated and normally clear. An imbalance in this solution may cause the proteins to lump together resulting in a clouding of the lens, which is known as cataract formation.

The study findings showed that the balance between different proteins or their ratios to each other is critical; when the protein is out of balance, clumps of protein form, causing the cataract to worsen.

These new findings are helpful in the continued search for new therapies to treat cataracts. The only known current method for treating cataracts is surgery.
