New wearable device aids dry eye sufferers

A new wearable eyelid device that is blink-assisted can help those suffering from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) in dry eye syndrome patients. The device addresses the underlying cause of dry eye by using targeted and adjustable thermal energy administered to the meibomian glands.

Untreated dry eye syndrome can make the eyes more susceptible to infections and make them more vulnerable to complications after eye surgeries. The eyes can deteriorate to the point where there is no effective treatment.

The wearable device is called TearCare and the treatment takes about 15 minutes plus the prep time for the patient. The device works by heating up the oil glands to an optimized temperature and the eye care provider expresses the glands so that they become unobstructed. The added benefit is the effects of TearCare usually last for about a year but unfortunately, it is not covered by insurance at this time.
