A new dermal filler is now available to consumers. Juvederm Volbella XC is used to plump up areas of the skin and can be used under the eyes. The filler is made of hyaluronic acid, which is commonly found in facial creams.

Injected into the skin using tiny needles, Volbella XC is specifically made to target the eyes' volume loss that creates dark circles under the eyes. The injections are made around and beneath the lower eyelid.

The injections are done in a doctor's office using a numbing cream. The doctor is able to smooth out the filler after the injection. The body is stimulated by the hyaluronic acid to produce collagen and elastin. Results typically last from 9 months to a year and the patient can typically resume normal activities the next day.

Side effects can occur and include, bruising and swelling as well as the less common side effects of nodule formation, infection and rarely, vascular occlusion.
