Cataract surgery comes with some risks and posterior capsule rupture (PCR) is one of those common complications. Patients who have received multiple intravitreal injections may face an increased risk of experiencing posterior capsule rupture years after their cataract surgery.
Researchers retrospectively examined records of 65,000 eyes and found that patients who had received intravitreal injections had a 1.04 times higher risk for PCR and patients who had at least 10 injections saw 2.5 times higher risk of the complication.
Scientists stress the importance of the pre-operative assessment and the need for doctors to find out how many injections the patients have had and to inform them of the increased risk.
